An idle survival-crafter about a lone digger holding back the Maw. Tunnel deep for materials, wall out a world-eating creature, and keep a doomed village alive one more day. Free, in your browser or on PC.
Long description (2–4 short paragraphs)
Use for the main itch.io description body.
You're the lone digger of a village at the edge of the world, and the Maw is coming to eat it. The Maw is a vast creature that advances from the right, one wall at a time, and the deeper and longer you go, the hungrier it gets. You can't kill it. All you can do is buy time.
So you dig. Tunnel downward for the materials to craft tools and machines and to raise the walls that hold the Maw back. Above ground, a village of survivors grows: feed them, shelter them from the storms, and they help you dig on. Progress is measured in depth reached, days survived, and souls sheltered.
When you finally fall, it isn't game-over. Your lineage takes up the shovel and digs on, past the graves of those before. For veterans, the endgame Astrolabe ritual reshapes the world at a permanent cost, and opt-in Challenges — including the design-your-own Artificer's Harrow — turn up the difficulty.
Underroot keeps running while you're away, so you can drop in and out. Play free in your browser or download it for Windows or Linux. It's name-your-own-price: pay what you want, or nothing at all.
Feature bullets
Use for the itch.io feature list. Benefit first, in the player's own stakes.
- Dig to survive — mining is your lifeline, not a side activity
- Hold the line — build and reinforce walls against a threat that never stops escalating
- Tend the village — keep fragile survivors alive; they're why you dig, and they help you back
- Lineage, not game-over — when a digger falls, the next takes up the shovel and digs on
- Idle-friendly — it keeps running while you're away; drop in and out anytime
- Endgame for veterans — the Astrolabe ritual reshapes the world at a cost; opt-in Challenges and the design-your-own Artificer's Harrow add difficulty
- Texture in the dark — storms that threaten the village, discoveries in the deep, a graveyard hill that remembers your dead, milestones worth marking
- Free, and yours — name-your-own-price, in the browser or on PC (Windows and Linux)
What makes it different
Use as a short "why this one" blurb near the top of the page or in outreach.
Most idle games grow a number forever. Underroot gives you a line you can't hold forever, and makes the holding matter. The loop stays calm while the stakes stay grim: the steady rhythm of a crafter with the countdown of a survival game running underneath. You're defending people, not a resource, and you're not one digger but a whole lineage of them, each buying the village one more day before handing on the shovel.
