Underroot FAQ
The questions people ask most about Underroot, answered straight.
What is Underroot?
Underroot is an idle survival game. You play a lone digger keeping a village alive against the Maw — a creature that eats the world one wall at a time. You dig for materials, wall it out, feed the people above ground, and when your digger dies, the next one carries on. There's a fuller version in The Pitch.
Is it free?
Yes. Underroot is free and name-your-own-price — pay what you want, or nothing at all. No ads, no paywalls. More in Platform and Monetization.
Do I have to download anything?
No. You can play free in your browser. If you'd rather run it locally, there are downloads for Windows and Linux. The details are on the Game Fact Sheet.
Does it keep going while I'm away?
Yes. Underroot keeps simulating while the game is closed or in the background, so you come back to progress you made while you were gone — and to a Maw that never stopped coming.
What happens when my digger dies?
Someone else picks up the shovel. Death isn't a failure screen here; your lineage carries on, digging past the graves of the ones before. Losing a digger is part of the story, not the end of it.
Can I beat the Maw? Is there an ending?
You can't kill the Maw. The longer you last, the hungrier it gets, so a run is about how long you hold and what it costs you rather than a final boss to defeat.
Is my progress saved?
Yes, automatically. Your account unlocks stick around even if you start a new run.
Is it single-player?
Yes. Underroot is single-player.
Who made it, and where do I find out more?
Underroot is a game by Swavvy AB. Everything — the game, the pitch, the press kit — is linked from underroot.se.
